Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close – A little boring movie

This movie is based on the 11th September 2001 incident. It is a story where a boy looses his father, and what he does to come out of that grief. He does that by searching a lock for which he has a key.

The story revolves around this boy Oskar Schell played by Thomas Horn, his mother played by Sandra Bullock and father by Tom Hanks. We are shown mainly the father-son relationship in the beginning of the movie. Tom Hanks and his son are playing a strange game. (Which I did not understand & I feel it is not important too). The boy enjoys his father’s company very much and likes the way his father treats him.

One the dooms day his father is there in the 105th floor of WTC and he leaves 6 messages in the answering machine before he jumps off the building. Oskar leaves early from school and he comes to know that his father is dead from TV and his messages in the answering machine. He is grief struck and is unable to come out of it. He hides those messages also from his mother too and starts hating her. A year after his father’s death he explores his wardrobe and accidentally breaks a vase which has a cover in which there is a key. The word Black is written on it. Now he starts to look for all the names which has Black in the Telephone Directory and makes his own report from the way his father taught him.

Oskar has a fear for crossing bridges, travelling in public transport and riding a swing. Soon a mute old man joins the boy in his search for the lock and the boy believes that he is his grandfather. They go together visiting some of the names as planned by the boy Oskar. In the old man’s company he over comes his fear of crossing the bridge and travelling in the public transport. He feels his father in his company. Suddenly the old man leaves after incompletely hearing to the messages from his father through the answering machine.

Soon Oskar gets an answer for the key but that is no way connected towards his father. He becomes disappointed and cries when his mother comes and calms him. That’s when he comes to know that his mother like his father was a step ahead of him and predicted his move to find the Black. She went before Oskar to the houses where Oskar would go and informed that a kid will come and ask about his father and she requested them to be friendly with him. Knowing this Oskar starts to like his mother. The movie ends with Oskar overcoming the fear of taking the swing. The screen freezes.

The movie is a little boring and never make us get involved with the story. The trailer is neatly edited and has a fast pace music. But the movie is a bit slow and dull.

My rating for the movie is 2/5*.
