AVATAR – Starts like a holly film but ends like a bolly film
Most of the reviews have given 5/5, and I had asked all those who have seen the movie and every one told that the movie is very good and it’s a must watch. Incase you have not seen this movie you can try asking the people who have seen it and I am sure they will be saying the same which I have heard.
Let me say, It’s a must watch in 3D @ theatres. In case the movie is not running in 3D at a place near you then I feel you can wait and catch it in DVD or TV.
My personal feeling watching this movie in 3D was like watching something real happening before my eyes. Initially when the movie started I was able to feel the 3D effect but slowly my eyes and brain got used to it and there wasn’t much of OOOMP factor after that.
Story:
Hope by this time you would have known the story of Avatar (from internet and asking Friends or by seeing it too). Yes.. in case you know it partially. Don’t worry it is the right one. The story of war between good and evil is not new for Indians. So predicting the story for us would be a piece of cake.
The story is quite simple and it has all the ingredients needed to make a very good Indian plot boiler. Except for some differences like
- Usually the aliens will be villains. But in this movie humans are the villains
- Usually the hero saves the heroine in the climax. But here the heroine saves the hero in the climax.
- Usually humans of different Sex love each other. But here a human and a navi (alien) love each other.
- Usually the fight happens at the villains place. But here it happens in a planet called Pandora which happens to the place of Navis who are innocent people.
The only thing which makes Avatar great is its DETAIL. James Cameron has captured the details of a highly fictious story as if it is happening in real. The movement of the eye ball pupil to the tail movement when the navis go to sleep to the facial movement of navis are all captured as if it is happening in real. Go to the movie just for the details. I bet. You can’t find a mistake in the details department.
The movie focuses on the human attitude of destruction. If you see the film you think about Iraq many times. Americans went into their homeland and attacked them. Here it is Navis and Pandora. May be in 2154 the power greedy Americans will attack another planet too. And it also shows how humans destruct nature. Where ever Humans go forests are going to disappear.
Technology at its peak.
The use of technology is great. I personally think that in some time directors will make a film with the help of just computers and a bunch of actors having sensors throughout the body acting in front of green screens. As literally Cameron has already used this for most of Avatar. Imagining Pandora in his head, he is brought it in reality in full colour and grandeur.
Just for your Info:
- The language which Navis speak is a structured language which Cameron asked Paul Frommer to develop.
- The Navi’s are 3 times taller than humans. And they can control their ear muscles just like our own pet dog does when it hears a sound.
- Cameron has used his patented Camera to shoot the movie and the camera replicates the human eyes.
- Catch the floating mountains and wildlife present in Pandora.
Rating:
Although Avatar lacks the touch which Titanic gave you after you watch the movie. I would give Avatar 4/5. The credit just goes to Cameron for creating this work of art. In case you have not watched Avatar go catch it in a 3D theatre only.

Chill and enjoy movies.

Here's my one cent (Sorry my other cent is out due to recession :D )
ReplyDeleteDetails - Watch Christmas Carol in 3D and u'd know that the details handpicked in Avatar is nothing and its not a new art
Pandora imagination in Cameron's mind - Bull shit. He used everything around us in our own world - Thotta sinungi plant for shrinking oval trees, our very own neurons for tree signalling, jelly fish for tree seeds, coral reefs for most flourescent trees etc
Biggest flaw - Men surpassed science to a level that they created aliens out of genetic engineering and used brain waves to control them. But they erred in not even expanding their armory n weaponary beyond mere bullets n napalm.
Best joke - Calling the rock unobtanium (and it did turn out that humans couldnt obtain it at the end)
No underground tunneling to obtain the mines n its rocks
3D mapping - which fails to see simple details such as pillars of trees inside the Navi village/big tree
Cameron just took 7 different movies I can name easily, put them in a cocktail glass, added a cherry in the name of FLUORESCENT 3D imaging n served it to all the drunk ppl who never knew what earthy water tasted like (delicious). The only ppl who watch that movie n give the aahs, and ooohs r the outsiders (non critics)...
(Sorry for the long comment. Was jus downed by the fact that one of my trusted critics - u - gave a 4/5 for it... PS, I don't consider this movie as art as there was one big message flaw in the movie... He never woke us from the destructional instincts as u mentioned.. He should have make us think deeper into it...)
Cheers mate...
H2S
Technology has improved sooo much aaah !!!!

ReplyDeleteI have not watched Christmas Carol. I don’t think it will be released in India. But if it releases I will surely watch it. I accept, Cameron has shown things which he has taken reference from our own earth. All are derived from our earth including the animals which roam Pandora. But showing everything in a computer generated background without missing even the flow of air is what I was talking about. Even in one image of nature which you see by your eyes will be difficult to create in computer because there are many tiny tiny things which we have to note.
I went to the movie with a feel that it is a highly fictious Si Fi film. And I was not looking for logic in each and every scene. I just made myself free from the current and future science and technology scenario.
I am quoting a point which I read in a review. That people enjoy scenes in which Dinosaurs run behind humans to kill them. But it is all very fictious. It will never happen. But if you see logic behind it then I feel you may never enjoy that movie. But making a movie which has science and technology with logic I feel it would become a documentary which will become a Discovery channel material. Some masala has to be there for movies to make money. That too for a movie which has invested 260 million $.
Had humans got the unobtanium then it would have shown that evil had won. The movie has to impress everyone in the world. So a standard happy ending was necessary. Although it is very cinematic and unpractical.
If Cameron has thought about underground drilling AVATAR may not have been made. But I feel he should have thought abt it. as drilling is done even now. But yours is a good point.
The story is not new or different. It is just slightly tweaked for 3D and grandeur. That’s all. This info was out even before avatar got released.
I have not watched many movies in 3D. and not many 3D movies come to India. So I feel it was a different experience at least for Indians in India. Both for Critics and non Critics.
Just a piece of advice. Watch a movie as a common man. Because trying to find logic in fiction is like trying to catch fish in air.
Thanks for that comment man. Comments both good and bad are very important for me.
I was just telling my point. Anyway no movie is liked by all humanity.
I liked it and you did not.
And a very big thanks for accepting me as your trusted critic.

Fish in the air - now that's a kinda comment I expect from Cameron... :D
ReplyDeleteFact - Out of the 260 million bucks, 160 million was spent on hyping the movie (banners, interviews, posters, Tees, etc in US). Now that's almost half of the annual Kollywood budget... :)
PS - What's with Indians and India and blahs... Hey I am still Indian.... That is the exact reason I am looking for a reasonable message in any movie. And that also my friend is the reason I consider films as a media of art (just like photography). From a photographers point of view, I stand with my point that Cameron's patented camera is not the first of the kind... Shall send you links (which I have to search my history) of really awesome working cameras. :)
PPS - have always been reading your reviews... ;)

ReplyDeleteHey..Your are an Indian in America ;)
Really nice of you to seek a good message from each movie.
Even In India the marketing of movies are kicking up fast. they all try to take the money in the initial week. Rather if the movie is good they will sure make money. Now just good marketing is enough to take the money. All MBA stuff is taking the movie industry.
Most of the patents are just a small change from others patents. So i am not surprised. there sure should be a similar and even better camera. Sure.. Send me the links later..
